On consecutive Sundays in September this year (09.13 and 09.20), we celebrate two years together doing church. Following the first week of this celebration, we invite those who call Crestwood Vineyard home to join us for a corporate day of fasting on Monday, September 14th. In pressing in to receive God's heart for where we are going together, we feel led to respond with a fast in line with the kind of fast Isaiah lays out in Isaiah 58. Together we will "fast one" day and "love one" person in line with this kind of fast. Come on Sunday September 13th to hear more!
In Isaiah 58, the prophet outlines the kind of fasting that God is looking for. It involves the sacrificial restraint of normal activities including eating food, but also the sacrificial offering of serving those in need:
“Is this not the fast that I have chosen:
To loose the bonds of wickedness,
To undo the heavy burdens,
To let the oppressed go free,
And that you break every yoke?
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,
And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out;
When you see the naked, that you cover him,
And not hide yourself from your own flesh?
Then your light shall break forth like the morning,
Your healing shall spring forth speedily,
And your righteousness shall go before you;
The glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.
Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer;
You shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’
- Isaiah 58:6-9
It is simple. You can join in our "Fast one, Love one" day of fasting on September 14th in two primary ways:
- By fasting from food a portion or the whole day.
- By loving someone in a practical way that you come in contact with.
